Partnering with People Tree on their organic and sustainable journey

By admin on April 12, 2023

We are People Tree’s manufacturing partner. Both brands believe in social sustainability as well as environmental sustainability, which is why we choose organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without the use of insecticides, pesticides and nitrogen fertilisers. Not only does this reduce the cost by 38% for farmers, but it also protects them from being exposed to toxic chemicals and eliminates the greenhouse gas emissions created though the production of these chemical fertilizers. Through organic farming, soils remain healthy and sequester more carbon helping to mitigate against climate change. Water consumption is reduced up to 91%, and there is a 40% reduction of C02 emissions per tonne of cotton fibre.

FROM THEIR WEBSITE

The people at Rajlakshmi craft different ranges all made from organic cotton. This season this includes the cotton knits, as well as our popular underwear range and the absolute bestseller: The V&A Pastoral Print Dress. Rajlakshmi Cotton Mills is based Delhi, India. The organisation was set up in 1934, and they are a pioneer in organic garment manufacturing in India. Seeking to combine high quality tailoring with a fair deal for farmers and workers, Rajlakshmi use mostly organic and Fair Trade cotton as well as other sustainable fibres such as Tencel, Modal and Linen. The cotton is certified by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), FLO-Fairtrade and Fair Trade-USA.

Rajlakshmi works together with Chetna Organic to ensure Fair Trade is practiced throughout the supply chain right down to the cotton farmers. Chetna Organic work with marginalised farmers from Maharashtra, Odessa and Andhra Pradesh towards improving their livelihoods and making farming a sustainable occupation. With the Chetna project, Rajlakshmi have helped set up many vocational training centres for women in rural farming villages. This educational training and support enables women become more financially secure. In addition to this Rajlakshmi have sponsored organic vegetable gardens in local schools, as well as contributing to more advanced school facilities such as science laboratories.

The People Tree Story
